Working with Saudi Arabia towards a greener future
The EDF Group established an office in Riyadh in 2012. It operates in the areas of thermal, renewables, district cooling, and energy efficiency, with a focus on aligning its R&D efforts with the strategic objectives of the Saudi Arabian government and Vision 2030.
In July 2022, EDF Renewables completed the Dumat Al Jandal project, which is currently the largest and most powerful wind farm in the Middle East. The project has a total installed capacity of 400 MW.
In 2023, EDF Renewables marked a significant milestone with the energisation of the South Jeddah Noor 300 MW Solar Project, one of the Kingdom’s first utility-scale solar plant. This accomplishment distinguished EDF as one of the two entities in Saudi Arabia to operate both solar and wind utility projects, and the leading non-regional investor in the domestic renewables industry.
In 2023, EDF inked a 25-year multi-utility concession contract for the AMAALA giga project. The company also won the 1,100 MW Al Henakiyah solar project, highlighting its rapid expansion in the country.
Furthermore, EDF was entrusted with two Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) projects, namely Taiba 2 and Qassim 2, each boasting a capacity of 1,800 MW. These projects are equipped with the potential for carbon capture, reinforcing EDF’s dedication to helping Saudi Arabia with its decarbonisation efforts.
Our key focus for the years to come lies in our dedication to fighting climate change and providing the best and most innovative solutions to that end. We are very eager to continue our growth in the Kingdom, to further increase our role in supporting this historic transformation in the country under Saudi Vision 2030 and to further integrate local talent and capacities into our development.
